The Mark of Veridia

In a quiet valley, there was a village called Veridia. The people there were simple shoemakers. One day, a wise man named Kaelen came to the village. He arrived quietly without a fuss.

Kaelen was a shoemaker who had a special – almost mystical – way of working. He taught the villagers that making a shoe was not just a job to be done to make a living. It was an opportunity to go within, find the creativity hidden inside them, and to express it in the shoes they created. Every stitch and every cut can be done with excellence. And excellence is pursued naturally when there is love beating in the heart.

The villagers learned from him, and they changed. They became amazing shoemakers. The shoes they made were wonderful: so comfortable and strong that they felt special to wear.

When it was time for Kaelen to leave, the villagers were very sad. They did not want to lose his teachings. Before he left, he gave them a gift. He drew a symbol that looked like a simple leaf.

“This will be your Mark,” he told them. “Put it on your shoes so that they stand out. People will come to associate this mark with the quality I have taught you. I trust you will never compromise on the quality.“

The first villagers who learned from Kaelen followed his words exactly. Their shoes, with the Leaf Mark, became famous everywhere. Everyone knew the Mark meant the shoe was the best you could buy. The villagers lived happy lives, proud of their work.

These first students of Kaelen grew old. They loved their children very much and wanted them to have the same good life. Out of this love, they let their children use the Leaf Mark on their shoes, even before the children learned how to make shoes perfectly. They hoped the Mark would inspire the children to become skilled at shoe-making.

But it did not always work that way.

Some of the children tried their best to live up to the Mark. But other children were not interested in excellence. They wanted to make money quickly. For them, the famous Leaf Mark was not a responsibility, but an easy shortcut. They made ordinary shoes, put the Mark on them, and sold them for a high price.

Many years passed. The village grew, and more generations were born. People started to forget the real teachings of Kaelen. His wisdom became just an old story. Making shoes was just a job again. But everyone still used the Leaf Mark. It was their tradition.

After many, many years, the shoes from Veridia were just ordinary shoes. You could not tell the difference between them and shoes from any other place. Still, the Leaf Mark was on every shoe.

But it didn’t mean anything special anymore. It was just a picture.

The people of Veridia had kept the symbol, but they had lost the special way of working that gave the symbol its meaning.

They had latched on to the superficial, the display but had forgotten the deep essence.

They had carried the name, but had forgotten the work that made the name honorable.

If Kaelen were to return today, I wonder how he would feel about the people of Veridia and the lost value of the Leaf Mark.
