The path of Gurbani is the path of love. A follower of Gurbani is forever yearning for God’s love to spring from his heart. God or Waheguru loves us intensely, immeasurably, and unconditionally.
ਸਦ ਬਖਸਿੰਦੁ ਸਦਾ ਮਿਹਰਵਾਨਾ ਸਭਨਾ ਦੇਇ ਅਧਾਰੀ ॥
Always forgiving and merciful, he sustains everyone.
However, we cannot feel his love till we love him back. (This is applicable in all relationships – we cannot feel or realize the love of another till we carry some love for the person).
The path of devotion is to reciprocate the love of God in some measure. Khoji says that the purpose of the creation of the universe was that this game of love could be played out between the creator and his creation. Thus, a devotee losing himself completely in the love of God is the consummation of the human life and the journey of the human spirit.
In these lines of Gurbani, Guru Sahib says that he would sacrifice all he has if he could get just a moment of Lord’s love. Such an invaluable thing is this love of God. When this love makes home a person’s heart, the person is filled inside out with divine love, mercy, compassion, peace, and joy. Just as every ray of sun carries the attributes of heat, light, energy etc, the love of God carries as attributes all the divine virtues of compassion, mercy, forgiveness, bliss, kindness, joy etc. A person lost in lord’s love becomes an embodiment of all of these virtues; these virtues flow out of him just as fragrance flows out of a flower.
An eternal yearning for this love of God is what is called devotion. Everything including meditation, kirtan (hymns), sangat (Association), and all the rituals of a religion are means to attain this love of God. And this love of God naturally means the love for the entire universe and humanity since everything and everyone is his creation, and he exists in each and everyone.
